Private Investors For A Business?

I’m wondering who has experience working with private investors to fund a business model (not for buying real estate)? I’m wading through the pool of web sites that are focused on this and have found some decent information, but would like to hear other’s experiences. What did you learn, where did you turn for answers, what type of arrangement did you have with your lender, etc?
As we launch a new business model, we see a need to help it grow fast through an influx of capital. We’d love to learn from your experiences!
