Finding Christian Contentment

A few years ago, Sarah and I attended a wedding, where God showed us the meaning of Christian contentment. It was during a time in our life and marriage when things were not all that great. The business was failing and our ‘money was no object’ lifestyle was coming to a screeching halt.
The reception was held up above the prayer room at ZHOP. Small cramped, no windows and of course no alcohol. As you can see this was totally off our grid.
We were invited because I employed a few of the intercessors at ZHOP in my business. They were hired to essentially pray for my business, which was failing. These intercessors were 18, 19, maybe 24 years old. Each of them married young, started having kids immediately and struggled month to month to make ends meet.
Sarah was quite throughout the meal, which is one of the signals in our marriage that she is in a tough place. I asked her what she thought so far, as this was her first time around this environment.
Her response amazed me then and still today. “I’ve never seen a group of people with so little and so content.”
It was one of those golden nugget comments that seemed like it was directly from the throne of God. Here we are, going from dead broke to doing incredibly well financially to now staring being broke again at 40 and my wife says.. “I’ve never seen a group so content.”
I’ve been reminded of this comment over and over in the past 3 years. When we were without two cars, I so wanted a second car, but God kept reminding me of the wedding. Issues with the mortgage, the bills, the lack of income… every single time, God reminds me of the wedding.
It came full circle this past summer, when Sarah’s Uncle George died.
Here was a man who was the Warren Buffet of his town. I don’t know how much he was worth, but that isn’t the point. He lived a contented and simple life.
He and his wife lived in simple townhome, drove Honda Accords and if they ate out, they made sure to bring home the leftovers and finish them up. Never letting anything go to waste.
Uncle George gave litterally hundreds of millions of dollars away in his life. Yet lived a simple life. It is the same kind of life Warren Buffet lives. In case you don’t know, Warren lives in the same 3 bedroom house he’s owned for the past 40 years.
It has made me realize the power of being content in all things. Being content in your life with the small house, the used car, the horrible divorce, the death of a child, the collapse of a business, the low number of clients… I could go on and on, is a critical ‘key’ to living loved in Gods kingdom.
This is not a secret part of the formula, but an observation in my life. When I am content, truly content, God seems to start moving in supernatural ways.
When I’m worked up, striving and pushing. Wanting to get things fixed and moving in the right direction as quickly as I possibly can, trying to make things happen. That’s when the doors seem slammed shut.
Contentment can only be learned through the crucible of God’s grace. There is not a mantra, a set of prayers, a simply five step process to better contentment, a special laying on of hands that I can perform on you to reach this level.
It can only be learned by walking hand in hand with the Papa. Seeing the joy in all things and being content no matter what the situation and circumstances. When that happens, you’ll discover true Christian contentment and what it means to trust Papa.
